Begin your C.S. Lewis pilgrimage where his imagination lived and breathed - The Kilns, Lewis Close, Risinghurst.
Built in 1922 and purchased by C.S. Lewis in 1930, The Kilns became his lifelong home, shared with his brother Warren (“Warnie”), their friend Mrs Moore, and her daughter.
From these quiet rooms came The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and many essays of faith and reason. The name “The Kilns” recalls the brick kilns once used on this land, later filled to form the pond behind the house.
Lewis’s routine was simple and disciplined: early-morning writing, long afternoon walks, and evenings of tea, tobacco, and conversation. Today, the C.S. Lewis Foundation maintains the house as a study centre. Pre-booked tours let visitors stand in Lewis’s study and sitting room, still furnished much as he left them.
