Upon leaving the cemetery… You are now in Longwall Street. On your left, you will find a substantial section of the old city wall. Behind that wall is the Magdalen College Grove with its unique deer park. You will see it better when you enter Magdalen College.
Longwall Street takes its name literally: a long stretch of defensive masonry dating back to the 13th century. For Lewis, such survivals of medieval Oxford hinted at the permanence beneath passing fashions. The deer you’ll glimpse through the trees belong to Magdalen College’s private park, maintained since the 1400s.
