LONGWALL STREET
Directions
Leaving the cemetery, retrace your steps towards Jowett Walk and continue straight on. The pavement narrows as you enter Longwall Street.
On your left stretches a medieval section of Oxford’s old city wall, with Magdalen College’s deer park behind it.
Orientation cue: The wall runs the length of the street — grey stone partly hidden by ivy.
About
“Upon leaving the cemetery… You are now in Longwall Street. On your left, you will find a substantial section of the old city wall. Behind that wall is the Magdalen College Grove with its unique deer park. You will see it better when you enter Magdalen College.”
Longwall Street takes its name literally: a long stretch of defensive masonry dating back to the 13th century. For Lewis, such survivals of medieval Oxford hinted at the permanence beneath passing fashions. The deer you’ll glimpse through the trees belong to Magdalen College’s private park, maintained since the 1400s.
